We’ve now been in lockdown since mid-March and the first easing on travel is planned for this coming weekend, coinciding with American Independence Day.
With a degree of trepidation we are making this our first night away in Persephone, our brand new VW California Ocean, who since the middle of lockdown has simply been driveway jewellery. As our first shakedown trip, we aren’t planning on venturing far on the basis that we will undoubtedly forget a crucial item and compromise our stay.

A more than just cursory search on the web has revealed that the majority of campsites are already fully booked, some with restricted facilities such as toilets and showers. As this is likely to be the case throughout July and August until the schools return again we have also elected to book a non-electric pitch, the reasoning being that we are more likely to be wild or off-grid camping for the next couple of months so we had better get prepared.
Post escape review… So we tried Harbour Lights in Haverigg near Millom. This is a flat site with a mixture of grass and gravel pitches with or without power. First day of opening under new regulations, therefore some fine tuning to be expected, great news was that the shower block was open.
Haverigg itself was cloaked in rain and high winds which made for interesting experiences for some of the campers overnight. At least Black Combe revealed itself in all it glory the following morning.
