Covid restrictions are still effecting campsites country wide, with the majority of Camping and Caravan Club sites closing their shower and toilet facilities. Whilst we can manage with our pop up toilet (pup) tent and Bivvy Loo it isn’t the best option for longer trips.
With this in mind we have been made shorter stays throughout August, some of the sites more basic than others but at least it has forced us to get out walking.
First on our list was Hawkshead Hall Campsite which we visited on their opening day post-Covid. Whilst the facilities were closed at the time the wide-open pitches gave us a sense of distance from our fellow campers. The real bonus of this site is the easy walk via a pathway that follows the stream into the village centre.
Even closer to home we enjoyed our stay at Shepherds View in Torver.

This is a bare-bones site that doesn’t offer facilities but does offer a limited number of electric hook-ups. For those of us that were unable to book a hook-up, we were relegated to a large, mainly flat field. I say relegated, when we stay next time this will be our choice as there were probably only 5 vans in a 5 acre field with views directly over the Old Man. Another bonus is the ability to take the short walk to the Wilsons Arms for their famous Fish and Chips plus a pint or two of Loweswater Gold.
Schools may have gone back in Scotland but it was still crowded in places, Loch Doon being a prime example of a beautiful setting ruined by both the volume and unthoughtfulness of wild campers.
Fortunately we found a cracking little site on the edge of the Galloway Forest and grabbed one of only 3 hook-ups available. Basic it may have been but it did offer facilities that were open, all at great value.
